Where NordVPN falls short

• App UI is busier - More features means more menus. The map-based server picker can feel cluttered compared to ExpressVPN's clean list. Not a dealbreaker, but ExpressVPN is more intuitive out of the box.
• NordLayer is a separate subscription - Business features require NordLayer, not a simple upgrade from consumer NordVPN. Separate billing and setup.
• Occasional server slowdowns - A few specific servers showed inconsistent speeds during peak hours. Switching servers resolved it, but ExpressVPN was more consistently fast across all servers.
• Linux app less polished - The Linux client is CLI-based (GUI available but less mature). ExpressVPN's Linux app has a cleaner interface.

Where ExpressVPN wins

• Consistently fast everywhere - Lightway protocol hit 800+ Mbps in US tests and maintained strong speeds across all 105 countries. Less variance between servers than NordVPN - you rarely need to "try a different server."
• Simplest setup and UX - Install, tap connect, done. The apps are clean, intuitive, and identical across platforms. Your non-technical team members will have zero questions.
• RAM-only servers (TrustedServer) - Every server runs entirely in RAM. Nothing is ever written to disk. On reboot, all data is wiped. This is the most secure server architecture in the consumer VPN space.
• KPMG and Cure53 audits - No-logs policy verified by KPMG (2022). TrustedServer architecture audited by Cure53. BVI jurisdiction (no data retention laws).
• 105 country coverage - Servers in 105 countries including many in Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa where NordVPN's coverage is thinner. Better for globally distributed teams.

Where ExpressVPN falls short

• Multiple tiers add complexity - ExpressVPN restructured pricing in late 2025 into three tiers: Basic ($3.49/mo), Advanced ($4.49/mo), and Pro ($7.49/mo), all on 2-year plans. The Pro plan (needed for full features) still costs more than NordVPN's 2-year rate, and the tier split means you may not get everything you expect at the entry price.
• Device limits by tier - Basic allows 10 devices, Advanced 12, Pro 14. NordVPN allows 10 on consumer plans; for very high device counts, compare tier limits.
• No built-in threat protection - No malware blocking, ad blocking, or phishing protection. You need a separate endpoint security tool.
• Business features less mature - ExpressVPN for Teams exists but lacks SSO, network segmentation, and the admin depth of NordLayer. Fine for small teams with simple needs; not enough for mid-market.
• Fewer specialty servers - No Double VPN, no Onion over VPN, no obfuscated servers. If you need these for specific security or censorship-bypass scenarios, NordVPN is the better pick.
• Kape Technologies ownership - Acquired by Kape Technologies (formerly Crossrider) in 2021. Some privacy-conscious users have concerns about the parent company's history. No evidence of policy changes, but worth noting.

ExpressVPN wins. Install and connect. No server picking, no settings to configure. The cleanest UX of any VPN we tested. Worth the premium if your team will actually use it because it's simple.

FAQ

Is NordVPN really faster than ExpressVPN?

In raw peak speed, NordVPN's NordLynx edged out ExpressVPN's Lightway in most of our tests (850+ vs. 800+ Mbps). But ExpressVPN was more consistent - less variance between servers and regions. For everyday use (video calls, cloud apps, browsing), both are more than fast enough. Speed alone shouldn't decide this.

Which is more trustworthy?

Both are trustworthy. NordVPN has more audit history (5 vs. 2) and Panama jurisdiction. ExpressVPN has RAM-only servers (stronger architecture) and BVI jurisdiction. Neither has had a verified data breach. We give a slight edge to NordVPN on audit depth and to ExpressVPN on server architecture.

Can I switch from one to the other easily?

Yes. Uninstall one, install the other. VPNs don't store data locally that needs migrating. If you're on NordLayer (business), you'll need to re-provision users in the new admin panel - budget an afternoon for a 10-person team.

What about Surfshark?
