NordVPN and ExpressVPN are the two most searched consumer and business VPNs. Both are excellent - but they're built around different priorities. NordVPN optimizes for features, value, and business controls; ExpressVPN optimizes for speed, simplicity, and premium UX. We tested both across speed benchmarks, privacy audits, business features, and real-world use to give you a clear head-to-head for 2026.
How we compared
- Speed & reliability - Download and upload throughput across US, EU, and APAC servers. Consistency under load and during peak hours.
- No-logs & trust - Independent audit results, server architecture (RAM-only vs. disk), jurisdiction, and transparency reports.
- Business features - Team management, central billing, SSO, dedicated IPs, and deployment options.
- Security extras - Kill switch, split tunneling, DNS leak protection, malware/ad blocking, and protocol options.
- Value - Price per month, devices per account, and what you get at each tier.
Quick answer
Choose NordVPN if you want more features, better value, and stronger business/team controls. Choose ExpressVPN if you want the simplest setup, polished apps on every platform, and don't mind paying a premium for ease of use.
NordVPN: strengths and weaknesses
Where NordVPN wins
- Speed (NordLynx protocol) - NordLynx, built on WireGuard, delivered 850+ Mbps in our US tests and 600+ Mbps to EU servers. Consistently the fastest or tied for fastest in every region we tested.
- Five independent no-logs audits - Audited by PricewaterhouseCoopers (2018, 2020) and Deloitte (2022, 2023, 2024). The most recent Deloitte audit (Dec 2024) covered all server types under ISAE 3000. No other major VPN has this many third-party verifications. Panama jurisdiction with no data retention laws.
- Threat Protection - Built-in malware blocking, phishing protection, and ad blocking at the DNS level. Works even when the VPN tunnel is off. One less security tool to manage.
- NordLayer for teams - Dedicated business product with central admin, SSO (Okta, Azure AD, Google Workspace), dedicated gateways, network segmentation, and always-on VPN enforcement. The most mature business VPN offering we tested.
- 10 simultaneous devices - ExpressVPN Basic now allows 10 (Advanced 12, Pro 14). NordVPN’s 10 covers phone, laptop, tablet, and home devices on one account.
- Better long-term value - $3.39/mo on a 2-year Basic plan vs. ExpressVPN's Pro plan at $7.49/mo on 2-year. ExpressVPN's restructured 2025 tiers (Basic $3.49, Advanced $4.49, Pro $7.49, all 2-year) have closed the gap on entry price but NordVPN still wins on features-per-dollar, especially with Threat Protection Pro included at the Plus tier.
- Specialty servers - Double VPN (route through two servers), Onion over VPN, obfuscated servers (bypass VPN blocks), and P2P-optimized servers. More options for specific use cases.
Where NordVPN falls short
- App UI is busier - More features means more menus. The map-based server picker can feel cluttered compared to ExpressVPN's clean list. Not a dealbreaker, but ExpressVPN is more intuitive out of the box.
- NordLayer is a separate subscription - Business features require NordLayer, not a simple upgrade from consumer NordVPN. Separate billing and setup.
- Occasional server slowdowns - A few specific servers showed inconsistent speeds during peak hours. Switching servers resolved it, but ExpressVPN was more consistently fast across all servers.
- Linux app less polished - The Linux client is CLI-based (GUI available but less mature). ExpressVPN's Linux app has a cleaner interface.
ExpressVPN: strengths and weaknesses
Where ExpressVPN wins
- Consistently fast everywhere - Lightway protocol hit 800+ Mbps in US tests and maintained strong speeds across all 105 countries. Less variance between servers than NordVPN - you rarely need to "try a different server."
- Simplest setup and UX - Install, tap connect, done. The apps are clean, intuitive, and identical across platforms. Your non-technical team members will have zero questions.
- RAM-only servers (TrustedServer) - Every server runs entirely in RAM. Nothing is ever written to disk. On reboot, all data is wiped. This is the most secure server architecture in the consumer VPN space.
- KPMG and Cure53 audits - No-logs policy verified by KPMG (2022). TrustedServer architecture audited by Cure53. BVI jurisdiction (no data retention laws).
- 105 country coverage - Servers in 105 countries including many in Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa where NordVPN's coverage is thinner. Better for globally distributed teams.
- Router support - Dedicated router firmware (Aircove) and easy router setup. Protect your whole office network without installing apps on every device.
Where ExpressVPN falls short
- Multiple tiers add complexity - ExpressVPN restructured pricing in late 2025 into three tiers: Basic ($3.49/mo), Advanced ($4.49/mo), and Pro ($7.49/mo), all on 2-year plans. The Pro plan (needed for full features) still costs more than NordVPN's 2-year rate, and the tier split means you may not get everything you expect at the entry price.
- Device limits by tier - Basic allows 10 devices, Advanced 12, Pro 14. NordVPN allows 10 on consumer plans; for very high device counts, compare tier limits.
- No built-in threat protection - No malware blocking, ad blocking, or phishing protection. You need a separate endpoint security tool.
- Business features less mature - ExpressVPN for Teams exists but lacks SSO, network segmentation, and the admin depth of NordLayer. Fine for small teams with simple needs; not enough for mid-market.
- Fewer specialty servers - No Double VPN, no Onion over VPN, no obfuscated servers. If you need these for specific security or censorship-bypass scenarios, NordVPN is the better pick.
- Kape Technologies ownership - Acquired by Kape Technologies (formerly Crossrider) in 2021. Some privacy-conscious users have concerns about the parent company's history. No evidence of policy changes, but worth noting.

Real-world scenarios
Remote team (10 people, mixed devices)
NordVPN / NordLayer wins. Central admin, SSO, dedicated gateways, and always-on enforcement. $80/mo on NordLayer Lite vs. custom pricing on ExpressVPN Teams. More control and better value at scale.
Solo freelancer working from cafes
Either works, NordVPN on long-term value. Both protect you on public Wi-Fi. NordVPN's Threat Protection Pro blocks phishing and malware without extra tools. At $3.39/mo (2-year Basic) vs. ExpressVPN Pro at $7.49/mo (2-year), NordVPN saves significantly on the long-term rate while offering more specialty server options.
Team with employees in restricted countries
NordVPN for obfuscated servers. If team members are in China, UAE, or other countries that block VPN traffic, NordVPN's obfuscated servers are designed to bypass restrictions. ExpressVPN works in some restricted regions but doesn't offer dedicated obfuscation.
Non-technical team, simplicity first
ExpressVPN wins. Install and connect. No server picking, no settings to configure. The cleanest UX of any VPN we tested. Worth the premium if your team will actually use it because it's simple.
FAQ
Is NordVPN really faster than ExpressVPN?
In raw peak speed, NordVPN's NordLynx edged out ExpressVPN's Lightway in most of our tests (850+ vs. 800+ Mbps). But ExpressVPN was more consistent - less variance between servers and regions. For everyday use (video calls, cloud apps, browsing), both are more than fast enough. Speed alone shouldn't decide this.
Which is more trustworthy?
Both are trustworthy. NordVPN has more audit history (5 vs. 2) and Panama jurisdiction. ExpressVPN has RAM-only servers (stronger architecture) and BVI jurisdiction. Neither has had a verified data breach. We give a slight edge to NordVPN on audit depth and to ExpressVPN on server architecture.
Can I switch from one to the other easily?
Yes. Uninstall one, install the other. VPNs don't store data locally that needs migrating. If you're on NordLayer (business), you'll need to re-provision users in the new admin panel - budget an afternoon for a 10-person team.
What about Surfshark?
Surfshark (owned by Nord Security, same parent company as NordVPN) offers unlimited devices at $2.19/mo. Great on value, but business features are less mature than NordLayer or ExpressVPN Teams. See our Best VPN for Business 2026 guide for the full comparison.
Verdict
Choose NordVPN if you want the best balance of speed, features, trust, and value. More audit history, built-in threat protection, specialty servers, and a mature business product (NordLayer) at nearly half the price. Our pick for most individuals and teams.
Choose ExpressVPN if simplicity is your top priority, you want RAM-only server architecture, or you have team members in 90+ countries and need consistently fast connections everywhere. Worth the premium if "install and forget" matters more than extra features.
