Core criteria & Testing parameters
1. Marketing & CRM Testing
We don't review CRMs by reading their feature lists. We set up isolated sandbox environments and import 1,000+ dummy contact records to test data handling at scale. Our criteria include:
- Integration maturity - We test native API connections with common tools (Slack, Google Workspace, Zapier) to ensure data flows without breaking.
- AI ROI - We test AI features (like HubSpot Breeze or Salesforce Einstein) against real sales playbooks. Do they summarize calls accurately? Do they hallucinate data?
- Adoption friction - If a tool requires a $10,000 implementation partner just to set up custom fields, we dock points.
2. Cybersecurity Testing (VPNs & Identity)
A breached password manager or a leaking VPN is a business-ending event. For security tools, our testing pipeline includes:
- Speed & Latency Profiling - We test VPNs on 1Gbps fiber connections across US, EU, and APAC servers to measure actual throughput drops during video calls and bulk file transfers.
- Leak Testing - We run extended WebRTC, DNS, and IPv6 leak tests. If a VPN drops our real IP for even a second during a connection interruption, it fails.
- Compliance Verification - We physically read the independent audit reports (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001) and verify the auditing firm. A "no-logs policy" means nothing without a Big Four audit.
3. Pricing reality checks
SaaS pricing is notoriously opaque. We strip away the marketing math to calculate the True Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) over a 3-year period, factoring in implementation costs, mandatory onboarding fees, and tier-gate limits (e.g. limiting automation runs to force an upgrade).
What we don’t do
We don’t recommend something because we’re paid to. We do earn commissions when you sign up through our links (see our disclosure). Our rankings and verdicts are based on the criteria above. We highlight both a top pick and a "best value" option where it makes sense.
Updates
We revisit our comparisons regularly. Software changes; we update our reviews to reflect current features, pricing, and performance. If you see something outdated, we want to hear about it.
